    Hooked On Phonics
Have I said that Aidan has learned the sounds that all the letters make? Well, last night Aidan and I was reading The Cat In The Hat and I am extremely proud to announce that he read his first word ever by himself: S-A-T, sat!!! He sounded out each letter and then I told him to put the sounds together fast. Amazing fruit! He did it! Once he realized he did such a great thing (I hugged him and told him I was so proud) he wanted to try reading the whole book. Well, he did read a few more words by himself: it, did, wet, and, sit, bit. He even tried harder words like "that" and "there" but he was sounding out each letter and I had to tell him that some words are harder than others.

Now I can't remember how I learned to read and since my Lola is not here anymore I have no one to ask. And I wonder if I'm teaching him the right way but I'm glad it's working. Can you remember when you learned to read all by yourself?

P.S. I bought The Cat in the Hat book to get Aidan oriented to the story before we watched the movie. Well, the movie is barely a semblance of the book and I was disappointed with some of the jokes in the movie only we adults could understand. There was a scene where The Cat was holding a hoe and he turned to it and said, "You dirty hoe." I couldn't imagine Dr. Seuss' Cat would do something nasty like that. The book is pure and simple and Aidan likes The Cat's antics. The Cat that was in the movie I just didn't get.
