A Learning Experience for Aidan and Me

Well, it's been three days since Aidan has been wearing underwear the whole day. He's averaging two accidents per day and they're happening when he's playing and not thinking about having to go to the bathroom. I guess it's understandable because he's still getting use to the process. When he pees, he pees standing up "like a big boy". When he takes a nap and during the night, he still wears pull-ups just in case. I'm not even worrying right now about when he's going to be able to stay dry while sleeping, though sometimes he really surprises me. I think in a month or two our training should be finished. Potty training started out so frustrating especially since this is the first time for both Aidan and me, but now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. What have I learned so far from this experience? 1) Listen to your child. He'll tell you when he wants to start. 2) Be extremely patient and offer lots of gentle words and support. 3) Show how proud you are when he succeeds (hugs, kisses, make a big deal) 4) For Aidan, stickers on my homemade chart was a great reinforcement. He got to put on one sticker for peeing and two if he pooped and peed. Once he filled it up, he got a prize. For his first full chart he got M & M's.

    1/27

We had a huge breakthrough today. This morning Aidan woke me up in his usual way - pouncing on my chest and grabbing my ears. Our usual routine is just to lay down in bed for 15 minutes before I change his diapers, but this time he said to me "Mommy, I need to pee-pee." So I grabbed him, ran to the bathroom and, YES, he did it! He wore underwear the whole day today with only two accidents. When he peed in his pants he had to tell Grandma and Daddy and with a pout he said "I'm sad." He's was so great today and I'm so relieved. I can't wait until we don't have to buy pull-ups anymore!
